The Way of the Magician is a Mystery School that I have developed to formalize and improve on the work that I have written about in my books. It is a fusion of Western magical practices and Eastern mystical practices, with an emphasis on creating a balanced approach to doing internal work for spiritual and personal growth, while also doing practical workings to solve problems and improve the quality of your life. The Way of the Magician is designed to supplement and enhance any spiritual work you are doing in other magical traditions while still presenting a unique perspective and approach to magical work.
What makes the Way of the Magician Mystery School unique is the integration of modern disciplines and cultural studies into your spiritual work. I think it is important for magic, as a discipline and spiritual practice, to evolve with the times, and part of this is done by exploring how other disciplines such as neuroscience, rhetoric, literacy, etc. can be meaningfully applied to spiritual practices.
The Sources behind the Way of the Magician
It’s useful to take a moment and explore the three sources that inform the Way of the Magician Mystery School.
Western Magic: Western esotericism is a blend of alchemy, hermeticism, Quabala (of several different types) ceremonial magic, and chaos magic. My practices in Western Magic are informed by all of these practices, but I’ve also experimented with and refined my practices by integrating contemporary disciplines into my spiritual work. Western Magic typically focuses on practical magic, although there can be elements of internal work included. We draw on all of those resources in our practices within Way of the Magician.
Eastern Mysticism and Magic: I turned to Eastern Mysticism and Magic to explore the mind-body connection as well as internal practices. Taoism, Buddhism, Tantra, and Tibetan Bon Shamanism have informed my internal work and mind-body practices, but also have some practical magic applications. We draw on all of these resources in our practices within Way of the Magician.
Contemporary Disciplines: Contemporary disciplines are fields of study and practice that fall outside of what is usually considered esotericism. For example neuroscience isn’t typically considered to be a metaphysical field of study. However the aspiring magician can learn about and apply principles of neuroscience to magical work, if s/he is willing to. In Way of the Magician we explore how to successfully integrate concepts and practices from non-esoteric disciplines and practices into your spiritual work.
How Way of the Magician works
The Way of the Magician takes a different approach to magical work. Typically in western magic the emphasis is on imposing one’s will on the universe in order to shape the universe according to one’s will. I take an ontological approach to magic, shifting the emphasis from doing to being and consequently also shifting the emphasis from imposing one’s will on the universe to working with the universe.
The Way of the Magician focuses on the establishment of a conscious recognition of your identity as the central foundation of your spiritual work. Instead of trying to deny your identity or kill it off, identity is integrated into your spiritual work and used to define your relationship with the universe as well as the various people, entities, etc., that inhabit it. The inner alchemical work and outer space/time magic work that is part of the Way of the Magician is ultimately designed to teach you how to achieve a state of causality awareness and realization, where your identity serves as the means by which you utilize magic to make meaningful changes in your life and in your relationship with the universe.
