How to stop entertaining yourself to death

The other day I was on a walk with an acquaintance and I was telling him how I had turned off my subscriptions to Hulu and Cinemark and Netflix because I decided I wanted to invest my money elsewhere.

“You’ve decided to stop entertaining yourself to death,” was his response.

That response struck me profoundly.

I had never thought of it that way before, but sitting passively in front of a TV, for me, feels like I’m doing exactly that, entertaining myself to death.

In the last 6 months I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want for the rest of my life. I turned 46 and I realized that if I haven’t already hit the halfway point of my life, at some point in the next few years, I likely will. It got me thinking about what I want to do with the rest of this life I’ve been blessed to be given. And I realized I didn’t just want to watch TV or play video games anymore. I’ve done enough of both and I’ll probably still do a bit of both in the years to come, but asking myself this question really forced me to re-prioritize my life.

Recently I did an exercise where I listed 25 things I am passionate about. I then looked at the top five things and recognized that for the forseeable future those top 5 are the subjects of interest I need to choose for myself. What are those 5 topics?

Magick

Writing

Coaching/teaching

Qi gong

Investing

I had videogames on the list of 25 things I’m passionate about, but its not in the top 5, so although I might occasionally play a video game, I’m refocusing overall on what really matters to me, so that the experiences I’m having align with the top 5 on my list and I use that to propel my life forward.

This kind of clarity is life changing and magical in and of itself. In this final month of 2022 I’ve already taken a few actions around this list that’s helping me focus on what really matters. In fact, I don’t really recognize myself from a month ago, because the person I’m choosing to become…that person is someone in touch with his purpose, choosing himself and the life he wants to live, instead of passively waiting on the couch for life to happen to him.

I’ll be sharing more about that in 2023, and how you can also apply a similar transformation to your life. In the meantime if you want in on where I’m going grab the ebook below, and learn a bit more about how magick works…it ones of the ways I have transformed my life in the past and how I’m transforming it in the present.
