The other day I was asked what a daily practice of magic ought to look like, for someone who’s starting to practice magic. The answer I give is going to be general for a specific reason: I can give you some suggestions on what a practice ought to look like, but the specific practices you decide to do are your own, and should be, because what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. I throw that in there, because as always, YOU are the authority of your life and so you should be the one to decide what you’ll do or not do.
With that said, I do have some recommendations on daily magical practice that can greatly benefit you and is really applicable across the board to anyone who is new or who has been practicing magic for a while. And if you don’t already do a daily practice, I highly recommend it because by making it a regular part of your life, you really get the benefits that are otherwise missed out on.
So what are my daily magic recommendations?
Do some type of Meditation each day. Integrating meditation into your daily magical work is important because it introduces internal work into the equation. Internal work allows you to buff out your internal conflicts and inconsistencies and self-sabotages that would otherwise get in the way of your work. It also enables you to figure out what you really want, from a proactive perspective, instead of a reactive perspective.
Some people will say they can’t meditate, and to this I would suggest focusing on not getting caught up in a specific result, such as emptying your mind. If you find that when you meditate you have lots of thoughts coming up, acknowledge them and try to discover what the underlying narrative is. If it’s a restless feeling or something else, be present with it and acknowledge it.
Do some type of ritual work each day. Doing some type of daily ritual, either with or without spirits, is also a useful way to hone your skills as a magician. It doesn’t necessarily need to be the same ritual each day either. You could do a practical magic working one day, and an invocation/evocation another day. The key thing is that you do some type of magical work regularly so that you’re improving your skills and experience.
In my case, I am doing the same ritual each day, working with the same spirits, but this is for a long term magical working and I find that the regular consistency is very helpful for building on what’s already been done previously. If you choose to do long term work, I recommend not taking a break, but instead sticking with it to the end of the work.
Do some type of movement each day. I think its important to integrate some type of movement into your magical practice. Many of us live a sedentary life style because of the jobs we work or whatever else, but it’s important to keep yourself moving. The movement doesn’t have to be part of your magical practice, but you should engage in some type of exercise.
I do integrate my exercise into my magical work so that I’m not only getting the physical benefit, but also the spiritual benefit. Whether its swimming, weight lifting or doing Qi Gong movements, I find some way to make the exercise into a meaningful part of my spiritual work, and at the same time benefit from moving and taking care of my body.
Those are my three general suggestions around what daily work ought to look like. I do want to note that doing any of these practices regularly requires a commitment of time, but if you’re serious about you’re magical work and making it part of your life, then you’ll find a way to devote the time. The investment of that time is life long (perhaps even longer) and it will help you take your work deeper.
